One win, one loss, and more gaffs from Billy

On this blustery and damp morning, the first problem to negotiate was how many layers of extra clothing to take! That sorted it was off to Brookland, a ground I had not visited before, that turned out to have a really nice Pavilion allowing the scorers to site inside in the warm - extra layers not needed!! It was great to see a couple of our "old" faces in the shape of Robin Shuter and Will but even they could not seem to raise the level of enthusiasm while the team shivered, on mass, through the obligatory wicket inspection. (There was the usual pointing and prodding and what appeared to be some very serious discussion, does this ritual aid in deciding the tactics for the game I wonder?)  There were mutterings about better ways to spend a wet Sunday but following the toss The Wood went into bat.

Duckboy ended up back in the Pavilion, bowled in the 3rd over, having hit a couple of boundaries - not a promising start.  With the run rate going at just under 3 an over matters progressed sedately - the G-man and Trev looking good for another decent partnership.  Alas not to be, the G-man went in the 13th over - 36 for 2.  Robin up next and he and Trev upped the tempo until Trev, on 45, was caught - 78 for 3 in 21.  Jezza was bowled without troubling the scorer (he wasn't the only one!) - 82 for 4 in 23.  Robin went next, bowled for 18 and apart from Dan who ended unbeaten on 13 nobody else got into double figures - all out for 116 with 3 overs left - not one of our better performances.

We made a reasonable start with Reedy taking their first wicket in the 3rd over courtesy of a Moxham catch - 12 for 1.  Unfortunately this didn't herald a batting collapse for them and with the run rate hovering round about the 5 mark, it didn't take Brookland long to knock off the runs for the loss of only one more wicket - 120 for 2 in 22.1 overs.  The match finished at just on 6 o'clock in what had now turned into a beautiful sunny evening.

So it's all eyes on Challock now in a fortnight's time - here's to a barn-storming finish . . . hopefully.

One win, one loss, and more gaffs from Billy

Saltwood's season finally got off the mark with a mixed weekend. A four run win on Saturday against a side from Thanet, and a loss to Elham on Sunday. It wasn't a complete loss for the boys on sunday as they got to witness Billy makingthe first gaff of the season, by tripping over his own laces and letting the ball trickle past him for four runs, much to the dismay of the bowler and amusment of the everyone else at the ground. Well done to both teams as they got to play a bit of cricket, and bring on East malling in the KVL

Eastchurch vs Saltwood

Saltwood's bi-annual visit to the Isle of Sheppey ended happily as the Wood secured their fourth league victory in five games, to move into the promotion places. As always the journey to the ground seemed to take longer than the actual game, but the Wood players on arrival were not surprised to see Billy coming back from the middle shaking his head. Is it even worth going out there with a coin anymore? more -

Sibton CC

Saltwood fans were treated to that rare sight- a relatively comfortable Saltwood run chase. There were no scares, no bitten fingernails, no frantic scrambles through the kit bag and no comical run outs, as the Wood chased down 152 for the loss of only two wickets. The victory was secured when Duckboy hit the winning six to end unbeaten on 87. At the other end, Oliver Ash looked more

Saltwood vs Little Chart

A good all round bowling performance helped the Wood to secure a hard fought win over Little Chart. Batting first, the Reene/Rice opening partnership began cautiously against one of the stronger opening bowling attacks in the league. Crucially, the Wood avoided losing early wickets, and with useful middle order contributions from Macca and in particular Winston, a big total looked on the cards. However, wickets began to fall at regular intervals and no-one managed to pass fifty. more

Saltwood lose to Hollingbourne

Saltwood lost their first league game of the season with a comprehensive defeat at the hands of title favourites Hollingbourne. After a lengthy tour of Hollingbourne (which seemed to involve asking the same man for directions about three times), Captain Crumbie finally made it to the ground in time to lose the toss. For the third week in a row, the Wood were put in the field, but Hemang, mixing up his pace intelligently, collected three important breakthroughs to leave the home side at 60-3. more

Russell wraps up run chase

A rapid unbeaten 47 from Jeremy Russell led Saltwood to an impressive three wicket win over newly promoted Littlebourne 2nds. The game had started less promisingly for the Wood when skipper Winston threw Duckboy the new ball. In hindsight Duckboy should have thrown it back, but instead he proceeded to ‘do a Gambo’ - more

All the way from Reeno

John Reene led Saltwood to an improbable seven wicket win over Wooten and Denton with a career best 152 not out. Reene’s innings believed by many Wood historians to be the highest ever by a Saltwood batsman, ensured that Saltwood got their league season off to a winning start as the Wood chased down 233. full report

Saltwood surrender unbeaten record.

Fifties from Alex McNiece and Winston Crumbie were not enough to prevent the Wood from crashing to a heavy eight wicket defeat against Elham. Batting first after winning the toss, The Wood amassed an impressive 215. Macca, adopting his preferred 'see it, hit it' method got the Wood off to a flying start, with some lovely clean hitting straight down the ground. As always Macca was particularly strong off the back foot and he was ably supported by Winston, who like so many before him (but not Gambo) benefited from using a new Gambo bat.....full report

Saltwood beat Mersham Le Hatch by 1 wicket

At 140-3 Saltwood looked set to record a surprisingly comfortable first win of the season, but as has often been the case at the Wood one wicket brings six. The Wood eventually found themselves needing three runs off the final over, with the last wicket pair of Pritchard and Rice snr at the crease. In fading light, the two exchanged singles, leaving one needed....full report

24 - its back!

In celebration of 24 season 5 returning to our screens, we've dragged our very own '24' from the archives to re-live the good old days when we got complaints and threats. Please note that some editing has taken place since the first broadcast some time ago. Sit back, and thank god that you're not special agent Billy Crumbie, as this is going to be the longest day (albeit cut short by potential legal action) of his life...
